The BRICS countries have stated their support for sustained engagement and negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in order to find a comprehensive solution to the Ukraine crisis.

BRICS countries reiterated their respective national positions on the Ukraine issue during the second BRICS sherpas’ meeting in 2022, which was held via video link from Tuesday to Wednesday, pledging to support multilateralism, abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and respect all countries’ legitimate security concerns.

Ma Zhaoxu, China’s Vice Foreign Minister and BRICS sherpa, presided over the meeting, according to Xinhua.

China, Russia, India, Brazil, and South Africa, collectively known as the BRICS countries, expressed their concern about the humanitarian situation in and around Ukraine, as well as their support for all humanitarian aid to Ukraine, including contributions from the International Committee of the Red Cross and UN agencies.

Noting their particular concern about the serious impact of unilateral sanctions on the global economy’s recovery, the stability of industrial and supply chains, energy and food security, and the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the sherpas urged attention to and effective addressing of the concerns of the vast majority of developing countries to ensure that the economies and people’s livelihoods of all countries are not jeopardised.
