Russia has stated that while peace discussions with Ukraine are difficult, there is potential for a compromise and that Ukraine’s neutrality is being carefully considered.

“For obvious reasons, the negotiations are difficult. But there is still a chance of reaching an agreement,” Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov remarked. “Neutral status is now being seriously considered, coupled with security guarantees, of course.”

The security of people in eastern Ukraine, demilitarisation of Ukraine, and the rights of Russian-speaking people in Ukraine, according to Lavrov, are all important problems.

“A neutral status is being seriously explored in terms of security guarantees.” “I believe there are concrete formulas on which we can agree,” Lavrov said.

Ukraine has also made cautiously encouraging pronouncements about peace talks, stating that it is eager to discuss to end the conflict but will not surrender or accept Russian ultimatums.

Vladimir Medinsky, Russia’s lead negotiator, said the two sides were talking about a possible compromise concept for a future Ukraine with a smaller, non-aligned military.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in Ukraine, accusing the US of endangering Russia by expanding the NATO military alliance eastward into Russia’s territory.
