A Pakistani artist lately released a song about fasting during the holy month of Ramzan, which has gone viral on social media. It’s not because of the catchy verses, but because of the song’s resemblance to the wildly popular “Kacha Badam.” Yasir Soharwardi’s song “Roza Rakhunga” quickly gained popularity on Twitter and other platforms, but users quickly recognised that it is too similar to the jingle sung by Bhuban Badyakar, a groundnut seller in West Bengal who used it to sell peanuts in exchange for old kitchenware and other broken objects. “Kacha Badam” catapulted him to fame. Soharwardi’s song has been viewed over 1.7 lakh times in less than a week since its release. It encourages people to be empathetic while fasting during Ramzan (a fast observed by Muslims from pre-dawn to sunset). Through his song, the Pakistani singer also encourages children to fast.
Soharwadi is also seen singing “Roza Rakhunga” with cats and birds. The song’s chorus, “Ramzan Ramzan aaya Ramzan Ramzan,” bears a striking resemblance to the lyrics of Badyakar’s “Badam badam.”
Twitter users have been furiously sharing the video and commenting on it, mocking the Pakistani singer. While some chastised him for using animal noises in his songs, others were outraged that the Karachi-born artist had hurt their feelings.
“Did he imitate Kacha Badam?” wondered one Twitter user. “I’ve been through hell. “It’s your turn now, guys!” said another.
“Kacha Badam” first became popular in November 2021, when one of Badyakar’s customers posted a video of him singing on social media. It was then taken up by celebrities such as Badshah, who released a song based on the jingle, which became a hit.
