Authorities said two police officers were shot and killed Tuesday while investigating a possible stabbing in a Los Angeles neighbourhood, and the suspect died at the scene.

When police from the El Monte Police Department arrived at the Siesta Inn in El Monte, east of Los Angeles, at 4:45 p.m., they were immediately fired upon, according to a city statement.

The officers passed away in a hospital.

According to the statement, “there are no words to express our anguish and devastation caused by this heinous act.”

A suspect died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Other details were not immediately disclosed.

The killings occurred just one day after a California Highway Patrol officer was shot and badly injured during a traffic check in Los Angeles’ Studio City neighbourhood.

The officer, 27, was shot several times. According to the CHP, he was in critical but stable condition at a hospital but was expected to recover.

A bloodhound assisted police in locating a suspect, and Pejhmaun Iraj Khosroabadi surrendered to police Tuesday morning in a homeless encampment in the San Fernando Valley’s Van Nuys region, according to authorities.

It was unclear whether he had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.
