Police said a man was arrested late Tuesday after the Washington Monument was vandalised, and the area around the monument’s base was temporarily closed.
“Currently, the region near to the base of the Washington Monument is off limits. USPP is holding a male adult in custody for vandalism. The repair process will be worked on by National Park Service conservators.” The event was reported on Twitter by the US Park Police (USPP).

Local media used Twitter to post images of red paint smeared on the west side of the monument’s base.
The 550-foot-tall monument, which stands between the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol in Washington, DC, is a popular tourist destination.
