A knife-wielding assailant injured four people at a renowned Shanghai hospital on Saturday, the second reported stabbing incident since the financial hub’s COVID-19 lockdown was lifted in early June. Police officers rushed to the much more than 100-year-old Ruijin Hospital on Saturday morning after hearing information of an attack, according to police. Visitors clambered under turnstiles to exit the hospital, while doctors ran out with their patients, some in wheelchair access and one on a mobile bed, according to social media videos.

In one video, a long trail of blood was shown on the marble surface of a flight of stairs.

“It’s very shocking,” a Shanghai resident who arrived for a check-up shortly after the hospital was closed said, declining to give her name. “This is very depressing. What has become of this society?”

Hospitals are a source of contention for many Chinese citizens, who face issues such as touts illegally trading appointment tickets, long lines to see doctors, and corruption, which can raise the cost of receiving care.

There have also been reports of patients assaulting doctors.

On the seventh floor of the Shanghai hospital’s outpatient department, police discovered a guy holding a crowd hostage with a knife. According to local police, when the man threatened to harm the captives, the police opened fire, subduing him.

According to the police, none of the injured are in a life-threatening condition, and the incident is being investigated.

A police officer told onlookers outside that Ruijin Hospital had been cordoned off and that all appointments had been cancelled.
