A Sri Lankan man has been arrested for stealing 50 tear gas canisters from cops, according to reports

According to media reports, a 31-year-old suspect was arrested for taking about 50 tear gas canisters from officers during protests at Polduwa Junction near Parliament. The canisters were stolen on July 13 while police and the army were attempting to disperse protesters attempting to march toward parliament. A group of protesters attacked a police three-wheeler carrying tear gas canisters to the Polduwa Junction blast site. Following the incident, the Welikada Police Department launched an investigation, according to the Daily Mirror.

Following questioning, police said they arrested a suspect in Obeysekarapura on Sunday and regained 50 teargas canisters from his residence in Borella. According to reports, the accused was a mason by trade and a Polonnaruwa resident.
Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe approved an Extraordinary Gazette stating a State of Emergency in Sri Lanka, effective Monday, as the island nation grapples with social unrest and a crippling economic crisis.

According to the gazette notification, the public emergency in Sri Lanka has been declared in the interest of the common security, public order protection, and the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the community’s life, according to local media outlet Daily Mirror.

According to the newspaper, Mr Wickremesinghe declared a state of emergency in accordance with Article 40(1)(C) of the Constitution, using the powers granted to him by Section 2 of the Civil Protection Ordinance (Chapter 40), as amended by Act No. 8 of 1959, Law No. 6 of 1978, and Act No. 28 of 1988.

The Sri Lankan Parliament announced that presidential nominations will be held on Tuesday, and the new President of Sri Lanka will be voted into office on Wednesday.
