Baghdad: Iraq’s security forces stated in a statement that two rockets were fired at Baghdad’s ultra-secure Green Zone, which contains the US embassy.

“Two Katyusha rockets were launched into the Green Zone of Baghdad. The first was shot down in the air by C-RAM defence batteries, while the second crashed in a square, damaging two automobiles “The document states.

According to AFP, the first rocket was shot down near the US embassy, and the second was shot down around 500 metres (1640 feet) distant.

Two missiles were shot down near the US embassy, the source previously told AFP.

The perpetrators of the attack have yet to be identified.

Hundreds of rocket attacks and drone bomb attacks on US troops and interests in Iraq have occurred in recent months.

Attacks are rarely claimed, but pro-Iran militias in Iraq are frequently blamed.

The latest rocket barrage comes after the government announced this week that the anti-jihadist coalition led by the United States had completed its “fighting mission” on its soil.

However, around 2,500 American forces and 1,000 coalition soldiers now stationed in Iraq will remain in the country to provide training, advice, and assistance.

Iraq’s pro-Iran elements are demanding that all US troops leave the country.

The strike also comes on the 10th anniversary of the withdrawal of US soldiers from Iraq on December 18, 2011, following Saddam Hussein’s overthrow in 2003.

The United States subsequently sent soldiers into the country to combat the ISIS group, which had seized vast swaths of the country in a rapid offensive.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi was uninjured in an unclaimed drone bomb strike on his official residence in the Green Zone in early November.

In September, a “armed drone” strike was launched against Erbil International Airport in Iraqi Kurdistan, which is home to a coalition base.
