European parliamentarians called on the globe to execute a green recovery and raise their 2030 climate ambitions ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow.

According to Xinhua news agency, the European Parliament’s Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee approved its contribution to the Glasgow conference with 60 votes in favour, 15 votes against, and three abstentions.

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) voiced worry in their resolution that the Paris targets stated in 2015 would result in temperatures well above three degrees Celsius by 2100 when compared to pre-industrial levels.

The MEPs encouraged wealthy countries to follow through on their pledge to raise at least $100 billion in climate funding for developing countries per year. They claimed that the Group of Twenty should take global leadership and commit to attaining carbon neutrality by the year 2050.

They also urged that by 2025, all direct and indirect fossil fuel subsidies in the EU be phased out.

During the plenary session of the parliament next week, all MEPs will vote on the motion.
