State media and her family reported the death of a young Iranian woman who had fallen into a coma after being detained by Tehran’s infamous morality police. Activists demanded that those responsible for her “suspicious” death be brought to justice. Mahsa Amini, 22, was detained by the police division in charge of implementing the Islamic Republic’s stringent uniform policy for women, which includes the need that they wear headscarves in public, on Tuesday while she was visiting the Iranian capital with her family.

Iranian state media claimed that “unfortunately, she passed away and her body was taken to the medical examiner’s office.”

Her family was described in Persian-language media, notably the Iran Wire site and the Shargh daily, as stating that the once-healthy Amini had been taken to the hospital shortly after her arrest in a coma and had since passed away.

What transpired between her arrival at the police precinct and her departure for the hospital is still unknown. She reportedly took a blow to the head, according to the 1500tavsir channel, which tracks infractions in Iran.

Social media posts showed crowds forming outside the hospital where she was receiving care and cops attempting to scatter the dozens of people who had gathered. Later in the evening in Tehran, people could be seen yelling anti-regime chants in a furious manner.

The 2015 nuclear deal is being attempted to be revived, and Robert Malley, the US envoy for Iran, said those guilty for her death “must be held accountable.”

On Twitter, prominent Iranian attorney Saeed Dehghan also referred to Amini’s passing as a “murder,” claiming that she had been struck in the head and suffered a fractured skull as a result.

Images of her allegedly falling to the ground while arguing with one of the female teachers about her attire were aired on state television on Friday.
