The US Senate has approved a $13.6 billion financial aid package for Ukraine

As tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to rise. On Friday, the US Senate passed a massive package funding the government and providing new Ukraine-related aid, according to media reports. The plan, which includes USD 1.5 trillion in government financing and USD 13.6 billion in aid to Ukraine, was approved by the US Senate 68-31, according to The Hill. Now it’s up to US Vice President Joe Biden to sign the law.

The bill proceeded quickly through Congress, passing the House less than 24 hours after it was introduced. The Senate will vote on the bill after it has been introduced. According to US media reports, nearly half of the aid package will go to the Pentagon so that troops may be deployed in the region and defence equipment can be sent to Ukraine.

“The people of Ukraine need our immediate help,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on the Senate floor. “This omnibus is the quickest and most direct route of sending them the help they need.”
