A 7.6-magnitude earthquake has been felt in northeastern Papua New Guinea, according to the US Geological Survey. A 6.46 am earthquake was felt. According to early estimations, the earthquake occurred 67 kilometres (42 miles) east of Kainantu, a sparsely inhabited region, at a depth of between 50 and 60 kilometres (30 to 40 miles). Since then, NOAA has stated that the region is not under tsunami threat.

Although it is unclear how much damage has been done, the USGS thinks that some casualties and damage are possible and that the impact should be rather limited. Papua New Guinea is situated on the eastern side of the island of New Guinea, north of eastern Australia and east of Indonesia. It is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of seismic faults that surrounds the Pacific Ocean and is the site of the majority of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions worldwide.
