France criticized North Korea’s passage of legislation announcing its preparedness to launch nuclear attacks on Friday, calling it a “threat to international and regional peace and security.”
The declaration from the foreign ministry followed early Friday reports in the North Korean state media that Pyongyang had passed a law authorizing preventative strikes, including in the event of conventional attacks. According to a ministry spokeswoman, “This fresh escalation on the part of the North Korean authorities presents a danger to international and regional peace and security.”

She continued, “France notes with significant concern the increasingly hostile statements from North Korea.”

With Kim Jong Un declaring that the nation’s nuclear status is now “irreversible,” Pyongyang’s action virtually ends the chance of denuclearization discussions.

The announcement comes at a time when North and South are experiencing greater conflict.

On addition to conducting a record number of nuclear tests this year, Pyongyang has attributed the Covid-19 outbreak in its territory to Seoul.
