On the final day of 2021, more than 85,000 people tested positive for the coronavirus statewide, up more than 10% from the day before, according to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.
According to Hochul, positive COVID-19 test results reached 85,476 on Friday, with 88 more deaths.
Positive test rates have risen to 22.2 percent, with the seven-day average nearing 20%, according to the state.
The total number of deaths in the state since the outbreak began has grown to 61,242, according to the state. On Friday, there were 8,451 patients in hospitals, up 532 from the day before.
Despite the fact that the state claims that 89.2% of New Yorkers aged 18 and up have had at least one vaccination shot, deaths continue to occur.
Hochul advised anyone who has not yet received a second or third vaccination to do so as quickly as possible.
