As the 46th President of the United States on Wednesday, Joe Biden is set to swear by the message of unity and the enormous task of healing a bitterly divided country. Four years after leaving the Beltway for his hometown in Delaware, Biden returned to Washington DC one day before his swearing-in. “Biden said, “Before boarding a private aircraft for Joint Air Force Base Andrews on his way to Washington DC, I am honoured to be your next President and Commander in Chief.” I will always be a proud son of the State of Delaware.
Biden noted that history is in the making because for almost five decades since he was elected as the youngest United States Senator from Delaware in 1973, he will be sworn in as President and Indian-origin Kamala Harris as the Vice President in public life.
Harris, 56, will be the first female Vice President and also the first person from African America and India to hold the second most powerful position in the United States.
Biden became emotional with tears rolling down his face during his brief speech.
As we wiped a tear from his eye, Biden said, “This is kind of emotional,” “It’s deeply personal that our journey to Washington starts here,” he said, speaking of the National Guard building named after Beau, his son.
Twelve years ago, Biden said that he was welcomed on the platform of the train by Barack Obama, a Black man, before becoming his vice president, and is now leaving to “meet a Black woman of South Asian descent” to become president and vice president.
He was accompanied by Jill Biden, the incoming First Lady, several grandchildren and family members, as well as Hunter Biden’s son, who was holding Beau, his baby. From there, he drove down to the National Mall where, in front of the Lincoln Memorial, he visited a memorial to the COVID deaths at the reflecting pool.
In one year of the pandemic, more than four LAKH Americans lost their lives.
His wife Jill, Vice President-elect Harris, and the incoming Second Gentlemen, Douglas Emhoff, joined him at the COVID-19 memorial. He was also joined by Cardinal Wilton Gregory, Archbishop of Washington, who delivered the Invocation; Yolanda Adams, a nationally recognised gospel singer who sang Hallelujah; and Lori Marie Key, who with Saint Joseph Mercy Health System sang Amazing Grace in Michigan.
Earlier, he thanked the residents of Delaware, his home state.
My fellow Delawareans, we will never be able to fully express what you mean to us on behalf of the entire Biden family. “The values we share in our family, the personality we strive for, the way we view the world, everything comes from home, from Delaware,” Biden said before he left his hometown for the national capital.
The state that gave home and a livelihood to my mother and father when they most needed it. The state that made me and my brothers and sister know that we can do whatever we dream of. That gave me a chance when I was just a kid, and since then I’ve been elected and believed in me,’ he said.
