The West claims that this is a flagrant breach of international law that will dramatically intensify the conflict. Russia will start its plan to hold referendums in four regions it currently controls in order to annex about 15% of Ukrainian territory on Friday.

President Vladimir Putin clearly backed the referendums after the Russian-controlled districts lined up to demand quick ballots to join Russia following nearly seven months of fighting and an important battlefield setback in northeastern Ukraine earlier this month.

Voting will take place in the self-proclaimed Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), which Putin recognised as independent just before the invasion, and in the Russian-installed governments in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia areas.

The vote, which the West and Ukraine claim is a fraud, is scheduled to start on Friday and end on Tuesday. Results are anticipated shortly after.

After the outcome, Russia will formally annexe the territory.

President of the United States Joe Biden informed the 77th session of the UN General Assembly that “the Kremlin is arranging a sham referendum to try to seize parts of Ukraine.”

According to Ukraine, which claims it will never accept Russian control of any of its territory and would fight until the last Russian soldier is expelled, Russia recognised the post-Soviet borders of Ukraine under the 1994 Budapest Memorandum.

Since 1999, Putin has been in charge of Russia and has stated that his country will never desert those who live in its controlled territories and who he claims want to break away from Kiev.

He frames the conflict as an effort to stop the persecution of Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine as well as a method to thwart what he claims is a Western plot to destabilise Russia. The persecution of Russian speakers is denied by Ukraine.

Putin issued a direct nuclear threat to the West, pledging to use all available means to defend Russian territory, which will soon include these territories of Ukraine.
