India firmly advocated on Saturday for the need to end the war through diplomacy and publicly stated its position on the Kyiv-Moscow conflict as the Ukraine war dominated the world’s top diplomatic stage this week. S. Jaishankar, minister of external affairs, remarked during his speech at the 77th UN General Assembly (UNGA), “People frequently ask us which side we support. Each time, we respond with a straightforward, honest response. India is and will continue to be solidly on the side of peace “adamantly argued.

He reiterated India’s position on the continuing Russia-Ukraine conflict: “We are on the side that respects the UN Charter and its foundational values.

Mr. Jaishankar emphasised the importance of diplomacy and stated that his group is in favour of talks.

The impact of the conflict was emphasised by almost every leader this week. In his presentation, Mr. Jaishankar stated, “We are on the side of people struggling to make ends meet, even as they face growing costs of food, gasoline, and fertilisers.”

Therefore, he added, “it is in our common interest to cooperate constructively, both inside and outside the United Nations, to find an early resolution to this crisis.”

The External Affairs Minister met with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov less than a few hours before Mr. Jaishankar’s speech and they discussed Ukraine.

The conversation took place just hours before Lavrov spoke at the high-level UN General Assembly’s general discussion, where he supported India in an expanded Security Council and urged for UNSC reform.

Mr. Jaishankar recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasising to Russian President Vladimir Putin during the UNSC meeting on Ukraine earlier this week that “this cannot be an era of violence.”

At the UN headquarters in this city earlier this week, Mr. Jaishankar also personally met with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to inform him of India’s principled stance, which emphasises the halt of all hostilities and a return to discussion and diplomacy.
