China’s strict lockdown measures in Shanghai have made life difficult for city residents, especially dog owners. The government has imprisoned the vast majority of the city’s 26 million inhabitants, preventing them from leaving their homes.

So, how are the city’s citizens coping with the city’s strict lockdown? A series of videos released on Twitter by Eric Feigl-Ding, an American public health scientist, reveal how life has ground to a halt in one of the world’s most populous cities.

One of the films also shows a family using an inventive method to walk their dog. It depicts a resident using a long rope to lower his Pomeranian dog from the third level of his home.

As the dangling dog reaches the ground, the extremely long leash allows it to explore the building for a while. The owner then retrieves it. More than 52,000 people have watched the video so far.

“This is NUTS,” one person commented. “I’m at a loss for words… it’s either innovative or repulsive,” said another.

Another film depicts a four-legged dog-like robot prowling the streets and giving COVID-related notifications.

The health expert has also shared a “little glimpse” of Shanghai’s transformation into a “ghost town.” The video depicts an eerie silence in Shanghai, with no vehicles moving across the main route except an ambulance, which passes only periodically. It also includes an image of a massive array of isolation centres near to a cluster of housing societies.

“Most people have no idea how dystopian this video is. I was born in Shanghai, which is one of the world’s most densely populated cities. However, have a peek at the streets…” Eric Feigl-Ding says in another tweet.

Shanghai’s city authorities extended an existing lockdown in eastern districts late on Thursday, just as western portions of the city were shut down.

According to the new restrictions, people will now be compelled to stay at home for as long as it takes to control the coronavirus outbreak. Most public transportation in the city has been suspended, and non-essential businesses such as restaurants and retail centres have also been closed.

The lockdown, which began on Monday, is intended to halt an outbreak of the highly transmissible Omicron type.

China’s outbreak is minor by global standards. However, Shanghai accounts for three out of every four local asymptomatic COVID cases in the country.
