On Friday, a gigantic diamond known as “The Rock” was displayed for the first time in Dubai, ahead of an auction in which it is projected to bring up to $30 million.
The 228.31-carat pear-shaped rock, which was mined and polished in South Africa over 20 years ago, is the largest white diamond ever to come to sale, according to Christie’s.
The Rock will go to Taipei, New York, and Geneva after its debut at Christie’s Dubai on March 26-29, where it will be auctioned on May 11.
“The Middle East has always had such a strong respect for valuable diamonds and gemstones,” said Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s worldwide head of jewellery.
“We thought it would be amazing to introduce the diamond in an area where there are so many great collectors of valuable stones of this type,” the business explained.
According to Christie’s, the diamond is the “biggest existing D-Z colour pear-shaped diamond ever graded” by the Gemological Institute of America, and it has “G colour, VS1 clarity.”
According to Christie’s, the previous record for the largest colourless diamond was a 163.41 carat sparkler that sold for $33.7 million in November 2017.
Sotheby’s in London sold “The Enigma” for $4.3 million earlier this year, making it the largest cut diamond ever sold at auction. It weighed 555.55 carats.
