The US dismissed Russian assertions that it supports a bioweapons programme in Ukraine on Wednesday, claiming that the charges were a hint that Moscow could soon use the weapons.

In a statement, State Department spokesman Ned Price said, “The Kremlin is deliberately promoting brazen claims that the US and Ukraine are conducting chemical and biological weapons activity in Ukraine.”

“We’ve also heard Chinese officials regurgitate similar conspiracy theories,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said, calling the assertions “preposterous.”

“Now that Russia has made these unfounded charges,” she said on Twitter, “we should all be on the lookout for Russia to deploy chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine or stage a false flag operation with them.”

On March 6, Russia’s foreign ministry claimed that Russian soldiers had discovered evidence that Kyiv was removing traces of a US-funded military-biological programme in Ukraine.

“This Russian disinformation is utter rubbish,” Price said, adding that Russia has a “history of blaming the West of the identical atrocities that Russia is committing.”

The US, on the other hand, said on Tuesday that it was working with Ukraine to prevent Russian soldiers from stealing biological research materials in the nation.
