The term “biodiversity” refers to diversity and is typically a measure of Variation. The ecological world’s balance is self-evidently required for survival. The International Day for Biological Diversity is observed every year on May 22 to recognize the importance of biodiversity.
The day’s goal is to raise awareness about the environment and all of the species that live on this planet. It also encourages people to identify and address similar issues and concerns.
Humans, the most developed species on the planet, often overlook its significance. Certain man-made actions end up destroying biological diversity under the guise of advancement or progress. And now is the time for humans to take notice and contribute to making the Earth a more inviting habitat for all living things.
Theme
The theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity in 2022 is “Building a shared future for all life.” At the upcoming UN Biodiversity Conference, the theme was chosen to maintain interest and support the post-2020 global biodiversity framework (COP15).
History
In December 2000, the United Nations General Assembly declared May 22 to be International Day for Biological Diversity. When the United Nations held its “Earth Symposium” in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992, environmental conservation and protection received special attention. After that, Biodiversity Day was celebrated on December 29 until 2000, when it was moved to May 22.
Significance
Given the type of lifestyle we lead today, this day is extremely significant. Biodiversity not only provides a home for many of the world’s species, but it also serves as a source of food, water, and other resources on which we rely to survive. Understanding the importance of biodiversity and recognising the problems is critical.
