According to White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki, Russia may use a "false" pretext to attack Ukraine "at any time"

On Wednesday (February 16), White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki stated that the window for a Russian invasion of Ukraine remained open.

Psaki said yesterday at a press conference that the window for a future Russian attack on Ukraine is still open, and that a contrived pretext for an intervention might include allegations like the one regarding mass graves in the Donbas region, according to CNN.

Psaki stated, “We are in the window where we believe an attack might start at any time.”

She stated that the US was sceptical of Russian claims of de-escalation.

Psaki explained, “There’s what Russia says and what Russia does.” “Russian troops continue to amass in a menacing manner on the border,” according to the report. Psaki did not provide specifics when CNN asked what a “significant de-escalation” would entail. “We’ll know it when we see it,” she said, adding that the US was looking for a “verifiable reduction of troops on the Ukrainian border,” but didn’t specify any figures.

She echoed White House warnings about “false flag” activities intended to establish a pretext for an invasion, saying “everyone should keep an eye out” for bogus films or reports on Russian media.

When asked about a hack in Ukraine that knocked out certain government websites, Psaki replied she didn’t know who was to blame. Because opponents try to “cover their tracks” in cyberspace, she said, establishing such a conclusion was tough. On Tuesday, Ukraine’s defence ministry and armed forces, as well as two Ukrainian banks, were the targets of an apparent cyberattack. It was unclear as to who was to blame right away.

Psaki also stated that the “door for diplomacy remains open,” however she added that Russia’s comments to US security concerns have yet to be received in Washington.

She stated, “I believe we are still waiting for it.”

In order to avert a European conflict, US President Joe Biden stated there was still “plenty of room for diplomacy” with Russia. Russia’s announcement that it is evacuating some troops in response to drills in Ukraine has been met with scepticism by Western officials, who have demanded proof, according to CNN. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken claimed there has been no “significant retreat” of Russian forces.
