According to local media, Pakistan suffers from a lack of innovation due to a low literacy rate, inadequate on-the-job training, and a lack of considerable educational expenditure.
Pakistan is rated 99th out of 132 economies in the Global Innovation Index for 2021, according to reports, owing to the country’s low literacy rate and lack of major investment in innovation through R&D and education.
Pakistan spends about 2.9 percent of its GDP on education. According to The Express Tribune, it has the lowest literacy percentage in the South and in Asia.
The literacy rate in the country is 62.3 percent, with 51.7 percent of women being literate.
People with insufficient literacy skills are ill-prepared for the labour market, higher schooling, and on-the-job training, according to the Pakistani publication.
Islamabad has also failed to make the necessary investments in innovation, including as research and development, education, strong infrastructure, and institution-supporting innovative activities, to improve the country’s educational system.
The rating is based on 82 different indicators organised into seven pillars. Pakistan is ranked 117th in terms of human capital and research.
The top three countries in terms of innovation are Switzerland, Sweden, and the United States. Vietnam is ranked 44th among Asian countries, India is 46th, and Iran is 60th. According to The Express Tribune, India is placed second among lower-middle-income economies and first in Central and South Asia.
