The Biden administration’s decision to distribute 25 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to India and other countries was praised by top American lawmakers on Friday.

Senator John Cornyn, Co-Chair of the Senate India Caucus, said, “I applaud the Biden Administration’s commitment to get COVID-19 vaccines to countries that need them most.”

In a tweet, Cornyn stated, “As Co-Chair of the Senate India Caucus, I believe this is an excellent opportunity to assist India in responding to their current, dangerous surge.”

Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith said in a tweet that as India battles the COVID-19 outbreak, it’s critical to continue sharing extra US vaccines to aid its friend and ally.

“Returning to normalcy and, ultimately, putting an end to this heinous pandemic will require some global cooperation,” Hyde-Smith said.

Dwight Evans, a member of Congress, said he agrees with Biden’s plan to send vaccine doses to India and other countries.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who was recently in Houston discussing the devastating COVID-19 conditions in India with the Indian-American community, praised Biden for taking the initiative.

The Texas Democrat urged Biden to expedite the shipment of vaccines and medical equipment to India, including any necessary waivers that were not granted during the previous administration.

“India is an important ally and strategic partner for us. “I urge the Biden Administration to build on its positive efforts to send surplus vaccines and supplies to India to assist the country in dealing with COVID-19’s devastation, just as India aided the United States during the pandemic last year,” Jackson-Lee said.

“Thank you, once again, to our local Indian American leaders for the vaccines that the current administration has already provided!” she exclaimed. President Biden has been urged to take the necessary steps to address the deadly second wave of COVID-19 in India by Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, a member of the Indian-American Caucus.

“Medical supplies and surplus vaccines are needed all over the world to bring this virus under control,” he said.
