During a virtual meeting on Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged his US counterpart Joe Biden that China and the US should respect each other, coexist peacefully, and promote win-win cooperation.

During his speech at the summit, Xi emphasised the importance of building a strong and stable China-US relationship, and he stressed his willingness to work with Biden to establish consensus and take proactive efforts to advance bilateral ties forward in a good manner.

The summit, which began early Tuesday, is Xi’s 68th and Biden’s 78th meeting since February. In September, the two leaders spoke for several hours on the phone. The conference took place amid rising tensions between China and the United States over Beijing’s policies on trade, human rights, the South China Sea, and Taiwan.

Xi said the two countries confront various problems and must improve communication and collaboration in his opening remarks, which were widely distributed by the state media here. Xi expressed his willingness to work with Biden to establish consensus and take aggressive actions to move China-US relations forward in a positive path, saying that the two countries should respect each other, live in peace, and pursue win-win cooperation.

The talks were anticipated to cover a wide range of topics, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and Tibet, as well as the AUKUS (a trilateral security pact between the US, the UK, and Australia) and the Quad alliance, which Beijing claims is geared at containing its ascent.

China is anxious that Biden will continue Trump’s trade battle. After accusing Beijing of limiting access to its markets and stealing American intellectual property, the US and China have levied tariffs on billions of dollars worth of each other’s exports since 2017.

Despite difficulties on a number of subjects, including Taiwan, the virtual summit came only days after both countries vowed to step up collaboration to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow.

Xi noted that both China and the United States are at key stages of growth, and humanity’s “global village” faces numerous obstacles. As the world’s two largest economies and permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, he said China and the United States must improve communication and cooperation, each run their domestic affairs well while shouldering their share of international responsibilities, and work together to advance the noble cause of world peace and development.

According to Xi, this is the common aspiration of the people of the two countries and the rest of the globe, as well as the combined mission of Chinese and American leaders.

He emphasised that a strong and stable China-US partnership is essential for both countries’ growth and the maintenance of a peaceful and stable international environment, including finding effective responses to global concerns like climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic. He claims that doing so will serve the two peoples’ interests while also meeting international expectations.

For the meeting with Xi, the White House established low expectations: According to the Associated Press, there will be no major announcements or even a joint statement.
