Following weeks of unrest at the flashpoint site, Palestinians and Israeli police clashed again on Friday at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound, injuring 12 persons, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

According to Israeli police, soldiers entered the area when “rioters” threw stones and pyrotechnics, especially towards the Western Wall, the sacred Jewish shrine beneath Al-Aqsa.

Officers employed “riot dispersal methods” to quell the unrest, according to the statement. Police allegedly used tear gas and rubber bullets, according to witnesses and AFP reporters.

According to the Red Crescent, the majority of those hurt had “upper body injuries.”

According to witnesses and AFP reporters, the fighting had subsided during morning prayers.

However, emotions remain high at the site, which is located in the heart of Jerusalem’s historic walled city, in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem.

Over the last two weeks, over 250 Palestinians have been injured in conflicts at the Al-Aqsa compound, Islam’s third holiest site and the holiest place for Jews, who refer to it as the Temple Mount.

The new turmoil comes as Muslims observe the penultimate Friday of Ramadan, which ends early next week.

Violence in the annexed east of Israel Jerusalem has sparked fears of another military battle akin to last year’s 11-day fight between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas, which was sparked by similar rioting at Al-Aqsa.
