'30 Hours in a Metro Station, Bombs Falling': An Indian Student in Ukraine

Videos of Indian students in Ukraine during the Russian invasion show them pleading for assistance in returning home. Some students have refused to leave their apartments, while others have relocated to underground metro rail stations that could be used as bomb shelters. There are approximately 16,000 Indians in Ukraine, the majority of whom are students.
In one such video, an Indian student is heard pleading with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to expedite the evacuation of Indians. Manish Jaiswal, a UP student from Ballia, is studying medicine in Ukraine.

“We are powerless. Since the morning, three to four bombs have exploded in the city. We’re almost out of supplies. Air routes have been shut down. I request that Narendra Modi Ji and Yogi Adityanath Ji make arrangements for the immediate evacuation of Indians “Mr. Jaiswal stated in the video, which was shot in his apartment. He did not say where he is staying in Ukraine.

People are seen sitting on the floors of an underground metro train station in a video sent by another Indian student. Nilesh Jain, a student in Ternopil, western Ukraine, said they had been stuck at the metro station for nearly 30 hours.

“The internet connection is subpar. We can hear bombs detonating. Please assist us. I beg Prime Minister Modi Ji to get us out of here as soon as possible “Mr. Jain stated.

An Indian student from Gujarat said in a video posted on Koo that there are long lines at ATMs and shops and that everyone is panicking. “Students who had booked flights to India were unable to return home because Ukraine closed its airspace,” the student explained.
Yesterday morning, an Air India flight dispatched for evacuation was forced to return midway. The Indian embassy has advised people to avoid the capital, Kyiv, and instead return to their home cities.

Missiles have been launched against major Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv. Russia’s ground forces entered Ukraine from various directions, and explosions were heard in cities along the coast.
