The Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia announced on Thursday that it had discovered an American espionage operation that had infiltrated thousands of iPhones using cutting-edge monitoring software.

The operation resulted in the devices of dozens of Kaspersky Lab employees, a company with headquarters in Moscow.

In a statement, the FSB, the primary successor to the Soviet-era KGB, said that thousands of Apple Inc. devices, including those of local Russian users and foreign diplomats stationed in Russia and the former Soviet Union, had been infected.

The American special services were engaged in intelligence gathering activity, according to a statement from the FSB, utilising Apple mobile devices.

The conspiracy, according to the FSB, demonstrated “close cooperation” between Apple and the National Security Agency (NSA), the American organisation in charge of cryptographic and communications intelligence and security. Apple’s cooperation with or knowledge of the surveillance operation was not supported by any evidence given by the FSB.

Refusing to comment was the NSA.

The operation, which his business described as “an extremely complex, professionally targeted cyberattack” that had targeted staff in “top and middle-management,” affected dozens of his colleagues’ phones, according to Kaspersky CEO Eugene Kaspersky, who posted on Twitter.

Igor Kuznetsov, a researcher with Kaspersky, revealed to Reuters that his organisation had independently noticed unusual traffic on its workplace Wi-Fi network around the beginning of the year. The Russian Computer Emergency Response Team, according to him, was not notified of Kaspersky’s findings until early on Thursday.

In response to Moscow’s accusations that Americans were behind the hacking and that thousands of other people had also been targeted, he claimed he was unable to respond.

It’s quite difficult to assign blame, he remarked.

According to the FSB, American hackers used their espionage campaign to compromise diplomats from China, Israel, Syria, and NATO nations as well as Israel.

Officials from Israel chose not to comment. Representatives from China, Syria, and NATO were unable to comment right away.

The gravity of the issue was noted by both the Kremlin and Russia’s foreign ministry.

The U.S. intelligence agencies have been gathering extensive data on Internet users without their awareness for decades by working with IT businesses, according to the ministry.

The Federal Guards Service (FSO), a potent organisation that oversees the Kremlin protection and was formerly the KGB’s Ninth Directorate, and FSB agents worked together to unearth the conspiracy, according to Russian officials.

The security of American technology has long been questioned by officials in Russia, which Western spies claim has built a highly sophisticated domestic surveillance infrastructure.

All members of the presidential administration are aware that devices like iPhones are “absolutely transparent,” according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
