Salman Rushdie Removed From Ventilator Following Attack in New York: Report

Salman Rushdie, a well-known author, was taken off a ventilator and may soon be able to speak, one day after being stabbed in New York on Friday morning while giving a lecture.

According to the Washington Post, Mr. Rushdie’s representative, Andrew Wylie, stated that his client had been taken off a ventilator and might be able to speak, without providing any other information.

Hadi Matar previously entered a not guilty plea to attempted second-degree murder and other counts in a New York court. Hadi Matar is suspected of stabbing Indian-born British author Salman Rushdie.

On Saturday, Matar appeared in court for a centralised arraignment and was lodged in Chautauqua County Jail without being granted bail.

Matar pled not guilty, according to Nathaniel Barone, his public counsel, CNN said.

On Friday, Matar appeared in court on counts of attempted second-degree murder and second-degree assault and was sent without bail to the Chautauqua County Jail.

“Hadi Matar, 24, of Fairview, New Jersey, was taken into custody by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation on August 12, 2022, for attempted murder in the second degree (a B Felony) and second-degree assault. Matar was processed at SP Jamestown before being taken to Chautauqua County Jail. On August 13, 2022, Matar appeared in a centralised arraignment and was remanded in custody at the Chautauqua County Jail without bond “the New York State Police stated in a statement.

The claim reads as follows: “At approximately 10:47 in the morning on August 12, 2022, a man who was later identified as Hadi Matar, 24, of Fairview, New Jersey, came up onto the platform and attacked Salman Rushdie, 75. Rushdie was flown to a nearby hospital by a helicopter after sustaining what appeared to be stab wounds to the neck and chest. We do not yet know his condition.”

Additionally, the 73-year-old Ralph Henry Reese, who was the event’s co-speaker, also sustained a slight head injury, according to the New York State police. Assisting in holding down the suspect was staged by Chautauqua Institution staff members and visitors. The guy was taken into custody by a state trooper who was stationed nearby the stage and was assigned to the event.

In New York, Mr. Rushdie, who received death threats because of his novel “The Satanic Verses,” was stabbed while performing.

On Friday, the suspect was named by the New York State Police. An attack on Rushdie took place before a speech at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, according to a statement they released detailing the entire affair.

It stated that the author apparently had a stab wound to the neck and was flown by chopper to a nearby hospital. One of the suspects has been detained.

The 75-year-old author rose to fame in 1981 because to his book “Midnight’s Children.”

The Iranian revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, or religious decree, in response to his 1988 novel “The Satanic Verses.” He spent many years in hiding due to the threat.
