In a prime-time speech intended to energise voters before of crucial midterm elections, US President Joe Biden sharply criticised Donald Trump and his “extreme” supporters on Thursday.
The president unleashed an astonishing attack on Republicans who support Trump’s “Make America Great Again” philosophy while speaking in Philadelphia, the birthplace of US democracy, and he challenged his fans to respond. Near the location where the US Constitution and Declaration of Independence were ratified more than 200 years ago, Biden roared, “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that challenges the very foundations of our republic.”

In an apparent allusion to the assault on the US Capitol by ardent Trump fans who would not accept his defeat, Biden issued a warning.

The 79-year-old leader claimed that “MAGA forces” were “bent to pull our country backwards” in reference to the widespread attack on abortion rights by extreme conservatives and the threat to other liberties like as contraception and same-sex marriage.

He warned that “democracy and equality are under attack.”

The president also attempted to strike a stirring note, referring of the “power we have in our own hands to combat those dangers,” with the control of Congress hanging in the balance in November.

Biden clearly urged mainstream Republicans to support Democrats and reject Trump’s political philosophy, which dominates a large portion of his party.

Regardless of your viewpoint, he continued, “I’m asking our nation to join together, unite behind the sole objective of safeguarding our democracy.”

The seasoned politician initially intended to fight this struggle through discussions with moderate Republican MPs and by economic and social initiatives targeted at the middle class after his election in 2020.

Polls, however, appear to suggest that the Democratic leader would be better served by being more forceful, therefore talk of reconciliation has mostly subsided.

The Republican Senate Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy claimed that the term “vilifies” “tens of millions of industrious, law-abiding Americans,” which infuriated conservatives.
