The day after being accused on numerous felony charges by federal prosecutors, Donald Trump blasted the “corrupt” US justice system on Saturday. This was a shocking event in the race for the 2024 presidential election.

The indictment’s 37 counts, which were made public on Friday and were centred on his alleged handling of sensitive materials, put the former president in line for a much harsher legal outcome than the accusations of personal, political, and business malfeasance he has previously mostly escaped.

Additionally, it creates the conditions for a presidential contest unlike any other in history, with President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice pursuing charges against the undisputed front-runner for the Republican candidature.

In two separate appearances before Republican state conventions, Trump blasted what he deemed an unfair legal onslaught on him, first in Georgia and then in North Carolina.

Trump stated during his speech in Greensboro, North Carolina, “You’re dealing with crazy lunatics.”

He claimed that the weaponized department of injustice under the Biden administration had falsely accused him, calling it “one of the most heinous abuses of power in our nation’s history.”

Earlier that day, Trump informed the crowd in Columbus, Georgia that he was being investigated by the legal system because he was seeking reelection to the presidency.

They are doing it because of me; otherwise, there would be no witch hunt and no indictment, he informed his fans.

The two incidents occurred only a few days before Trump is scheduled to appear in federal court in Miami to answer the explosive allegations that he put US national security “at risk” by willfully holding onto classified defence information, collaborating to obstruct justice, dishonestly hiding documents, and making false statements.

The charges, brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith of the Justice Department, each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

So far, many Republicans — including some of Trump’s opponents for the party nomination — have responded by uniting with the former president and amplifying his fury.

The indictment, according to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who has had a bumpy relationship with President Trump, represented a “dark day” for the country.

Mr. McCarthy declared, “I stand with President Trump, as do all Americans who believe in the rule of law.

Also supporting the notion of a “weaponized” Justice Department was Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is viewed as Trump’s strongest rival for the Republican nomination.
