Cheteshwar Pujara took the hits and Rishabh Pant countered the untouched 89 as India chased a record total to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with three overs and three overs to spare on the last day of the series.
On Tuesday, India resumed without loss on 4 and had 98 overs to pursue a victory goal of 328 or three full sessions to bat through to save the draw it needed to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy.
No team scored more than 236-7 to win a test match at the Gabba in the fourth innings. India won by three wickets, now replacing Australia’s 1951 team for that record, with a total of 329-7.
India has now done it twice, after never winning a test series on Australian soil until 2018-19, on consecutive tours Down Under.
In his 211-ball 56, opener Shubman Gill posted 91, Pujara absorbed no fewer than 11 hits. The four-test had been tied 1-1, meaning that only a draw was required for India to retain the trophy.
We are all overjoyed at the success of the Indian Cricket Team in Australia. Their remarkable energy and passion was visible throughout. So was their stellar intent, remarkable grit and determination. Congratulations to the team! Best wishes for your future endeavours.
