The Historic Vehicle Association (HVA) has announced the addition of a new car to its National Historic Vehicle Register, a database of historically significant automobiles that includes photographs and documentation. That car is the iconic DeLorean DMC-12 from the first “Back to the Future” film.

This is the film’s hero car. According to the organisation, the car was restored between 2012 and 2013, by a group of fans led by the movie’s author, Bob Gale. It lacks the “Mr. Fusion” fuel tank from the second film, as well as the steel wheels and white wall tyres from the third. It has a 130 horsepower Peugeot-Renault-Volvo V6 engine and a manual transmission, just like in the film.

Universal Studios owns the car, which is on long-term loan to the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles. If you can’t make it to California, the car will be on display at the National Mall in Washington D.C. in September as part of the HVA’s Cars at the Capital programme.

The DeLorean is the 29th automobile to be inducted into the National Historic Vehicle Register. This year, the HVA will introduce a new vehicle. The DeLorean is in good company with the original Bullitt Mustang, the 1911 Marmon Wasp (the first car to win the Indianapolis 500), and Bruce Meyers’ original Manx dune buggy, to name a few.
