A regional police official said on Thursday that Ukrainian authorities discovered a mass grave of more than 440 bodies in the eastern city of Izium that was recaptured from Russian forces, adding that some of the people were killed by shelling and air strikes.

Serhiy Bolvinov, the Kharkiv region’s chief police investigator, told Sky News that forensic investigations would be conducted on all bodies.

440 bodies were interred in one location, according to Bolvinov, who described it as one of the largest burial sites in a significant town in liberated (areas).

He claimed that some people killed as a result of airstrikes and others as a result of artillery fire. At the weekend, a large number of Russian troops left Izium.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy blamed Russia and compared the discovery to what occurred in Bucha, a city outside of Kyiv, during the early phases of the Russian invasion in late February. The Russian military are being accused of committing war crimes in that area by Ukraine and its Western allies.

In a video speech, Zelenskiy stated that “Russia is leaving dead behind it everywhere and must be held accountable.”

Russia has often refuted accusations that it uses war crimes or targets people.
