As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to threaten the country’s economic recovery, US President Joe Biden has urged unvaccinated Americans to get immunised sooner.
“Today’s message is not a happy one. It’s one to remind us that there’s still a lot of hard work to be done both to beat the Delta variant and to keep the economic recovery moving forward “Biden made the remarks from the White House on Friday, following the release of the July employment report, which showed that nearly 1 million jobs were added to the economy.
“America can defeat the Delta variant just as we defeated the original Covid-19,” President Obama said, according to Xinhua.
“We can do it, so use a mask when necessary and get vaccinated today. All of this will save lives, and it means we won’t see the same level of economic damage as we did when Covid-19 first began.
“Yes, cases will rise before falling. It’s a pandemic of the unvaccinated… It is putting an unnecessary strain on our country “Biden added.
The country is seeing a resurgence of new Covid-19 cases due to the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant, while millions of Americans remain unvaccinated.
Following Biden’s remarks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Friday that 50% of the US population, or more than 165.9 million people, have been fully vaccinated against the virus.
According to the CDC, more than 193.7 million people, or 58.4% of all Americans, have received at least one dose.
Earlier this week, 70% of US adults had received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, a month behind President Biden’s Fourth of July target.
On December 14, 2020, the first Covid-19 vaccine was administered in the United States.
