President Joe Biden has invited three young Indian Americans to his Diwali celebration as a sign of support for the Deferred Action Legal Childhood Arrivals (DALCA) youngsters who are threatened with deportation from the US. Children subject to extradition under the DALCA are those who have outgrown the visa or legal status of their parents. The bulk of these youngsters, over 200,000 in number, are Indian Americans.

The three young Indian Americans thanked Biden for the kindness and expressed their “pleasure” at joining the President and Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House.

“We were honored to attend this Diwali event with the President and Vice President and many other Indian American leaders. By the end of the year, we are hoping that a solution to stop the aging-out of all children of long-term visa holders will be found.

The organisation “Improve The Dream,” founded by Mr. Patel, has been advocating for children who have grown up in the US as dependents of long-term visa holders but are now at risk of self-deportation due to ageing out.

Because of the nation’s out-of-date legislation, he added, some 200,000 young immigrants are present in the US as dependents of their parents on temporary work visas.

He was asked by Vice President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden to attend the Diwali celebration at the White House on Monday along with two of his colleagues from “Improve the Dream,” Pareen Mhatre and Athulya Rajakumar.

“My family and I have always enjoyed celebrating Diwali. I am really honoured to be able to promote “Improve The Dream” and shed awareness on our cause. Meeting South Asian trailblazers at the White House to celebrate the festival of lights, which is very dear to our hearts, was an odd experience “explained Ms. Mhatre.

Ms. Rajakumar echoed similar thoughts when she remarked, “We feel honoured to have been recognised and invited to this year’s spectacular Diwali celebration by President Biden and his administration. We are here to demonstrate that the President and the administration care about our experiences.

President Biden commended the community for helping to make the Diwali festival such a pleasant part of American culture during his comments at the Diwali event.
