In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic’s second wave, Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi said he’s doing everything he can to persuade the Biden administration to send India any extra vaccines that aren’t being used in the US.

He was speaking at a webinar hosted by Howard University, in collaboration with Gautam Buddha University and the Association of Indian Universities.

“I’ve been doing everything I can to persuade the Biden administration to give India vaccines that we don’t use here in the United States. I asked them to share some of our 80 million vaccine doses that were left over. They reacted positively, but I am now proposing something even bigger,” Rajakrishnamoorthi said in his brief address on ‘Strategies for Dealing with COVID-19, Especially Access to Vaccine Supply.’

The Nullifying Opportunities for Variants to Infect and Decimate (NOVID) Act was also recently introduced by the Congressman. “It would pass muster as a US initiative to vaccinate 60% of the world’s population. It is critical that we achieve herd immunity in India and other countries to the tune of 60% or more,” he said.

“It is not only the compassionate and moral thing to do, but it is also the intelligent thing to do. People from all over the world will return to harm everyone in the United States if we do not act now. As a result, we must implement this programme and provide assistance to everyone around the globe. “COVID-19 is a threat to everyone, everywhere,” he stated emphatically.

According to a press release, the NOVID Act is a large-scale coronavirus prevention programme that will ensure that Americans are not exposed to another deadly COVID-19 outbreak at home.

The NOVID Act directs the State Department to establish the USD 19 billion Pandemic Preparedness and Response Program (PanPReP), modelled after PEPFAR, to oversee and coordinate the US global strategy for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, reports that the webinar was hosted by the Swadeshi Jagaran Manch were debunked by a spokesperson for the Congressman (SJM).

Will Baldwin, the Congressman’s communications director, and senior advisor told PTI that the Congressman was invited to the event by Howard University, which hosted it, and that he had no contact with or knowledge of the SJM’s involvement.
