Daily cases have started to double in China, which is experiencing the largest outbreak since the Covid 19 pandemic began. On Tuesday, China had more than twice as many new Covid cases as the day before. In the most recent 24-hour period, China’s National Health Commission reported 3,507 new locally distributed cases, up from 1,337 the day before.
A fast-spreading strain called as “stealth omicron” is putting China’s zero-tolerance policy to the test after a devastating initial outbreak in early 2020.
The province of Jilin in northeast China was home to the majority of the new cases, with 2,601 reported. Smaller outbreaks have erupted across China, notably in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, among the country’s largest cities.
While the numbers in mainland China are low in comparison to many other countries, including the semi-autonomous city of Hong Kong, they are the highest since COVID-19 killed thousands in Wuhan in early 2020. According to sources, Hong Kong is currently experiencing the fifth wave of Covid 19, with most of the country’s cities, including Shanghai, on lockdown.
As the fast-spreading “stealth omicron” type generates the country’s largest outbreak since the pandemic began two years ago, China restricted most people from leaving a coronavirus-hit northeastern province and mobilised military reservists on Monday.
