China added almost 13,000 new Covid-19 illnesses, with official media reporting a patient infected with an omicron mutant subtype.

The virus, which was identified from a moderate Covid-19 patient in a city less than 70 kilometres (43 miles) from Shanghai, evolves from the BA.1.1 branch of the omicron variety, according to Global Times, which cited sequencing data from local health authorities. According to the report, the subtype does not match previous coronaviruses causing Covid in China or those submitted to GISAID, where experts from all around the world share the coronaviruses they sequenced in order to track alterations.

A case reported in Dalian, northern China, on Friday also did not match any coronavirus detected in the country, according to the municipal government’s WeChat account.

Almost 12,000 of the cases recorded countrywide on Saturday were deemed asymptomatic.

Vice Premier Sun Chunlan came in the country’s viral hotspot in Shanghai to oversee preventative measures, and she directed officials to stop the epidemic “as quickly as feasible,” according to Xinhua. On Saturday, the number of cases in the financial centre surpassed 8,000, including 7,788 asymptomatic illnesses. Authorities have announced that Shanghai will begin a new round of mass testing on Monday.

Sun, who had earlier travelled to Jilin to monitor lockdown measures in the northeastern province, has directed Shanghai officials to “resolutely” carry out efforts to halt the epidemic. All 25 million citizens of the metropolis are being quarantined in some way.

According to a tweet on an official WeChat account, officials in Sanya, Hainan Province, have banned all transportation in order to halt the spread of Covid.
