India is one of the countries that provides the most troops for the UN’s peacekeeping operations, thus the UN peacekeeping chief is travelling there. India, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, and Japan will all be visited by Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix. The international journey will begin on Thursday and go until October 15.

According to Stphane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Lacroix will attend a two-day conference held by the Challenges Forum in New Delhi. The conference will discuss significant issues pertaining to peace operations and will bring together leading decision-makers, practitioners, and academics. Then, Abu Dhabi, Tokyo, and Islamabad will all be visited by the UN peacekeeping chief. According to Dujarric, Lacroix’s visit is meant to thank the countries for their efforts and support of UN peacekeeping and to provide an update on developments aimed at increasing the efficacy of peacekeeping.

Lacroix will have meetings with important government figures while on his journey. The Challenges Forum website states that on October 6-7, the CAF22 event would “assemble partners and key stakeholders” to “explore how future peace operations might remain relevant in a world of escalating geopolitical friction.” The organization’s partner in India, the United Service Institution of India, will co-host the CAF22 (USI).

“Place for Preventive Deployment in Diplomacy,” “Protection of Civilians in Peace Operations,” and “Protecting the Protectors” are the forum’s three sub-themes, which all relate to the forum’s main theme of “Future of Peace Operations.” India is one of the biggest suppliers of police and soldiers to these operations, with more than 5,700 of its soldiers now serving in nine of the twelve UN peacekeeping missions. India has dispatched around 260,000 troops on missions since the 1950s. 177 Indian peacekeepers have paid the ultimate price over the years, the most of any nation that deploys troops. (PTI)
