During the ongoing US pullout from Afghanistan, rockets struck a neighbourhood near Kabul’s international airport on Monday. It wasn’t evident who started them right away. Witnesses say the rockets hit Kabul’s Salim Karwan neighbourhood early Monday morning. The blasts were quickly followed by gunfire, but it was unclear who was firing.

A witness who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation claimed they heard three booms and then saw a light in the sky that looked like flames. According to the witness, people fled following the explosions.

Officials from the United States did not immediately reply to demands for comment. Following the rocket fire, US military cargo planes continued to evacuate the airfield.

According to US sources, a drone strike on Sunday blew up a vehicle carrying’multiple suicide attackers’ from Afghanistan’s Islamic State offshoot before they could target a military evacuation at Kabul’s international airport. Three children, according to an Afghan official, were killed in the strike.

By Tuesday, the United States will have left Afghanistan.
