Following the Taliban regime’s new media standards in Afghanistan, the Islamic Emirate’s freedom of expression is in jeopardy, as the group proclaimed that no media or news agencies are allowed to publish anything that is contrary to the so-called administration of the Taliban.

Local authorities in northern Badakhshan province have urged media outlets to publish their news after a review and censoring, according to Khaama Press, citing the Afghanistan Journalists Safety Committee.

The Taliban in Badakhshan province have proclaimed that no media or news organisations are allowed to broadcast against the group’s interests, according to the AJSC’s most recent report.

According to Khaama Press, the province Director of Information and Culture, Muezuddin Ahmadi, has stated that women are not permitted to appear in public for the purpose of reporting, but that female media workers are allowed to work in the office with male employees.

Hundreds of journalists have fled the nation, others have gone into hiding, and many women have been forced to leave their jobs due to fear of retaliation for their work. Smaller businesses have been hit hard by the economic downturn.

According to Nehad Rasana-e-Afghanistan (NAI), a media advocacy group in Afghanistan, over 257 media outlets have closed their doors throughout the country since the Islamic Emirate took power, citing financial difficulties and constraints. Print, radio, and television stations all fall under this umbrella.

Over 70% of journalists have lost their jobs or left the country, according to the watchdog. The people who are truly protecting freedom of speech and expression have been the ones who have been most affected.

There was no way for the media to report on government corruption, inefficiency, or incapacity, or the Taliban’s treatment of civilians.
