Four months into Russia’s gruelling war, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday encouraged other G7 leaders to “give up” on Ukraine as he promised further financial backing for Kyiv.

“Both Ukraine can and will succeed. But for them to succeed, they need our support. Giving up on Ukraine now would be a mistake “On the eve of a wealthy country summit of the Group of Seven in the Bavarian Alps, Johnson made a statement.

According to a statement from Downing Street, Britain is prepared to guarantee loans worth further 429 million pounds ($525 million), as the Ukrainian government is concerned that it may run out of money by the fall if no new funding is provided.

With this offer, Britain will have given Ukraine almost $1.8 billion in financial and humanitarian aid this year.

Johnson has been unwavering in his support for Ukraine despite criticism at home due to his defeat in two by-elections and a barrage of unfavourable news. Since Russia’s invasion on February 24th, he has made two trips to Kyiv and was first in the West to send lethal weapons to the Ukrainian army.

Johnson will attend the G7 conference in Bavaria’s Elmau Castle from June 26–28 together with US President Joe Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and equivalents from Italy, Canada, and Japan.

Following the event, a crucial NATO meeting will take place in Madrid.

On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to address the G7 leaders via video link. According to Downing Street, he is anticipated to call on allies to offer sustained support for his war-torn nation.

Any evidence of weary or decreasing Western support for Ukraine, the statement stated, “would directly play into (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s hands.”

According to Johnson’s spokeswoman, as the battle continues, Western assistance for Ukraine needs to enter “a new phase,” and the issue is how to best “empower” Ukraine.

As he urges his fellow leaders to boost their economic, military, and political support for Ukraine, the PM will be requesting that at the G7 and NATO summits, the spokeswoman said.
