On the twenty-first day of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the situation between the two countries remains tight. In a persistent bombardment that is exacerbating the humanitarian disaster in this war, Russian forces are hammering Ukrainian cities and getting closer to the capital, Kyiv. Despite this, a sliver of a diplomatic channel remains available, with a Ukrainian official indicating that Tuesday’s talks with Russians were difficult but that there remained opportunity for compromise.

Russia is also circulating a proposed United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a cease-fire to allow civilians to be evacuated and humanitarian aid to be delivered in a safe manner. Two more journalists were killed while covering the war, an estimated 20,000 people fled the port city of Mariupol, and some people are travelling into Ukraine to help its citizens. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is asking for more international help, those close to Russian President Vladimir Putin are facing more sanctions, and two more journalists were killed while covering the war.

Despite the possible dangers of travelling in a combat zone, the leaders of Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia travelled by train to Kyiv on Tuesday to demonstrate their support for Ukraine. The visit, according to Slovenia’s Janez Jansa, was intended to send a message to Ukraine that it is a European country that deserves to be admitted to the EU one day.
