Following the explosion at the bridge that left at least three people dead on Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an order boosting security measures for the Crimea bridge, the Kremlin announced.

The gas pipeline and energy bridge that connect the peninsula to the Russian mainland should be secured, according to a statement from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to the document, which was obtained by TASS, “the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation shall be vested with the authority to organise and coordinate protection measures for the Kerch Strait transport crossing, the energy bridge connecting the Russian Federation and the Crimean Peninsula on the power grid, as well as the main gas pipeline between the Krasnodar Region and Crimea, during their operation.”

According to the study, this is done to increase the effectiveness of the safety precautions for the Kerch Strait transportation crossing, energy bridge, and gas pipeline.

A train travelling to the Crimean Peninsula had seven fuel tanks when a truck explosion on the bridge caused them to catch fire. Media sources state that three persons were killed in the explosion, which also caused two of the spans of the road bridge to partially collapse.

After a Saturday explosion on the viaduct, the Crimean Bridge’s road route was restored to cars and buses, although a thorough inspection procedure was still required. Trucks must still travel across the Kerch Strait via ferry, according to Sergei Aksyonov, the leader of Crimea.

According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, the railway portion of the Crimean Bridge has undergone a preliminary inspection, and restoration work is in progress.

The bridge, which was built to connect the peninsula to Russia’s transportation network, was inaugurated by President Vladimir Putin in 2018—four years after Moscow had occupied Crimea.

A railway and automobile portions make up the 19-kilometer bridge that spans the Kerch Strait and joins Crimea with Russia’s mainland. In 2020, it achieved full functionality.

Earlier, the transport ministry had stated that trains might be able to use the bridge, which has two parallel lanes for cars and trains, by 8 pm Moscow time (1700 GMT) on Saturday.

In light of the crisis on the Crimean Bridge, Putin heard reports from the chiefs of the security services as well as the prime minister Mikhail Mishustin, the deputy prime minister Marat Khusnullin, the ministers of transportation Vitaly Savelyev and emergencies Alexander Kurenkov.

Putin gave the Prime Minister the go-ahead to form a government commission to look into the incident and deal with the fallout as soon as feasible.
