Israel and Palestine hold a key meeting to ease tensions, and the US welcomes the move

Following the meeting in Sharm El Sheikh between representatives of Israel and the Palestinian Authority, US President Joe Biden on Sunday phoned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The meeting with senior political and security officials from Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Egypt, Jordan, and the United States was welcomed during the call by Joe Biden, the White House said in a summary of the conversation.

According to the White House, Joe Biden reaffirmed the need for all parties to work quickly and cooperatively to improve security coordination, denounce any acts of terrorism, and preserve the viability of a two-state solution.

The two leaders also talked about the West Bank’s unrest and hostilities, according to the statement. Joe Biden reaffirmed his steadfast dedication to Israel’s security and the continuing collaboration between the two national security teams, including their joint efforts to counter all Iranian threats. According to the White House, both leaders decided to maintain frequent communication over the ensuing weeks.

“The participants noted that meetings at this level have not occurred in almost a decade, and that these meetings are building towards establishing a series of understandings upon which to de-escalate tension,” said Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for the National Security Council, White House, in a separate statement.

We applaud the meeting and agreements reached today in Sharm El Sheikh between senior political and security officials of Israel and the Palestinian Authority, the official said. He added that this was the second such meeting in this format, with senior officials from the United States, Egypt, and Jordan present, following the gathering in Aqaba three weeks ago.

Watson stated, “We look forward to continuing these discussions as we approach the Holy Month of Ramadan, Passover, and Easter, as well as over the following months.
