Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan warned on Saturday that his “country is sinking” after announcing that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) governments in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces will dissolve their assemblies on December 23 to allow for new elections.

Imran Khan also reiterated his call for free and fair elections, warning that otherwise the country would sink. According to Dawn, he stated that free and fair elections are the only way to solve Pakistan’s problems and that the government is “afraid” of new elections because it is afraid of losing.

“We will hold provincial elections once both assemblies have been dissolved. Furthermore, our 123-125 National Assembly members whose resignations have not been accepted will request that the speaker accept their resignations from within the assembly “he explained.

“Then we will prepare for elections after that,” he said, adding that “with our around 130 seats in the National Assembly, we will go to the NA speaker and demand him to accept our resignations instead of picking a few.”

In a speech to the people of Pakistan, the PTI chief urged them not to be disappointed, describing it as “running away from our duty to society,” according to the Dawn newspaper.

Imran Khan began his speech by lamenting the country’s current economic situation under the Shehbaz Sharif administration. He stated that a government with a new mandate and the support of the nation would be able to elevate its status, according to Dawn.

He stated that the country required “fresh and fair elections because we fear the country is drowning.”

He accused Pakistan’s former chief of army staff, General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa, of being involved in a “conspiracy” against his party.

“Gen Bajwa is the only person responsible for bringing down the PTI government,” the former Pakistan prime minister was quoted as saying during his speech by The News International.
