US prosecutors have reportedly informed Donald Trump’s attorneys that they are looking into how he handled sensitive papers after leaving the presidency, according to reports in US media published on Wednesday night. This is an indication that Trump may face charges.

The notification, which came from the special counsel’s office, according to The New York Times, CNN, and other media sources, is the clearest indication yet that prosecutors are getting near to charging the former president, who has already been indicted in a different case.

According to The Times’ “two people familiar with the matter,” it was unclear when Trump’s team was informed that he was a target.

A special counsel appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland is investigating a collection of top-secret records that Trump kept at his Mar-a-Lago home after leaving the White House.

After the FBI executed a search order at Mar-a-Lago in August, it removed about 11,000 documents. As a result, Trump may be charged with obstructing justice after he resisted efforts to retrieve the cache for months.

Trump responded to media allegations by saying, “No one has told me I’m being indicted, and I shouldn’t be because I’ve done NOTHING wrong,” in a post on his Truth Social network on Wednesday.

John Rowley, James Trusty, and Lindsey Halligan, three of Trump’s lawyers, met with lawyers from the Justice Department on Monday, according to US media. They were spotted by reporters leaving the DoJ building in Washington, but they made no comments.
