Hundreds of teachers gathered in Herat, Afghanistan’s western province, on Thursday to demand that the Taliban pay their salaries, which had been unpaid for more than four months, according to local media.

According to Tolo News, the instructors demanded that the Islamic Emirate expedite their payments, claiming that they were facing serious financial difficulties.

Some of the teachers expressed fears that hunger was affecting their families since they were unable to provide food and medical treatment for their children, according to the publication.

“Many instructors don’t have enough money to pay their electricity bills, and their homes are without power,” said Nasir Ahmad Hakimi, a schoolteacher.

“My daughter has been sick for a month, and I haven’t been able to get her to the doctor,” said teacher Saadat Atif.

According to Tolo News, at least 18,000 instructors, including 10,000 women, have not been paid in the last four months.

“For the previous four months, all teachers and civilian staff have been unpaid,” said Mohammad Sabir Mashal, the teacher’s union’s president.

“They make a living by selling household appliances, but they have nothing to sell anymore,” he explained.

According to Tolo News, the province education chief, Shuhabuddin Saqib, stated that teachers will receive one month’s pay in the following days.

Hundreds of instructors have recently fled the country, according to officials, due to a variety of difficulties.

Hundreds of doctors from Samangan and Nuristan provinces gathered at the UNAMA gate in Kabul last week to demand that the World Bank pay their unpaid salary for the previous 14 months.

The protestors said that not only had their salaries not been paid, but that their regions’ clinics were also suffering from a severe lack of medicine.

Banks have been closed since the Taliban took control of the country, leaving millions of people cashless. Employers have failed to pay their employees, and those who do have money in their accounts are unable to access it.

The situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating since the Taliban gained control of the country on August 15 following the fall of the government.
