With gun violence on the upswing in major cities around the country, including New York City, lawmakers are scurrying to find answers.

President Joe Biden and New York City Mayor Eric Adams have recently issued measures to prevent gun violence. On Thursday, the two met with New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to review their efforts and consult with neighborhood residents caught in the crossfire.

This comes roughly two weeks after two NYPD officers, Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora, were shot and murdered by a guy who reportedly had an illegally imported pistol from out of state. According to police, the firearm was reported stolen in Maryland and was never found prior to the Harlem shooting.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, a charity that identifies and monitors gun occurrences through police reports, news articles, and other sources, there were over 44,000 gun fatalities and over 40,000 gun injuries in the United States last year.
Both leaders’ proposals, which are based on a variety of methods, including preventing the flow of illicit firearms into the city, are set to take effect in the coming weeks.

Adams said on Thursday that the city needed federal assistance, especially from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, to stop the flow of weapons.

“We need to raise our money to ATF so they can tell us where these firearms are getting into our city other cities,” Adams said on “Nightline.” “Too many firearms are pouring from the south and flooding into cities across the country, including Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City. And if we work together properly, we can get the ATF to identify the dealers who are illegally trafficking these firearms, allowing us to stem the flow of guns in our communities.”
